Box Score FLORENCE, Ky. – Kentucky State's baseball team amassed 11 hits and scored seven runs in a challenging 17-7 defeat against the Thomas More Saints in Florence, Kentucky.
In the opening inning, Thomas More secured a 2-0 lead with a double that drove in two runners, setting the tone early.
By the end of the second inning, the Saints bolstered their lead to 4-0 through a combination of a double and a sacrifice play.
The third inning proved monumental for Kentucky State, as
Mitchell Collins' single advanced
Isaiah Zepeda-Felix to second base and allowed
Parker White to cross home plate. Zepeda-Felix swiftly stole third base, and
Cedric Poellnitz's subsequent single drove in both Zepeda-Felix and Collins. A triple by
Treyvon Fletcher then brought Poellnitz home, leveling the score at 4-4 by the end of the third inning.
Thomas More reclaimed the lead in the fifth inning, scoring two runs to surge ahead 6-4 after five innings of play.
Kentucky State responded with
Jayden Clark scoring on a fielder's choice another run was added when
Collier Higgs hit a double to bat in White and tie the game 6-6 at the top of the sixth. The Saints five runs in the bottom to take a 11-6 lead after five innings.
Isaiah Johnson hit a sacrifice fly into centerfield to bat in Collins and add one run at the top of the seventh. Thomas More extended their lead to 16-7 after scoring five runs in the bottom of the seventh.
At the bottom of the eighth one run was added by Thomas More to win the contest 17-7.
During the contest Collins, Clark and
Kelton Saylor each earned two hits. Poellnitz led the Thorobreds with two RBI and White led his team scoring two runs.
Conference play is up next for the Thorobreds as they head to Clark Atlanta for a three game series beginning at noon on Feb. 24 in Atlanta, Georgia.
