ATLANTA — Kentucky State baseball used an early lead to take game one and a seventh-inning rally in game two to secure a doubleheader sweep of Clark Atlanta on Saturday.
GAME ONE
A grand slam from
Kendall Garland, along with a solo home run from
Logan Christophel and 11 hits as a team, led to a 12-7 win in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader.
The Thorobreds ignited their charge early on a single to right field from
Haruta Endo that brought in Brady Wooldrige. With the bases loaded,
Harry Major was walked, advancing
Ryan Campbell home and giving Kentucky State an early 2-0 lead in the first inning.
In the top of the second inning, Garland hit a grand slam into left-center field that added four runs as
Ryan Campbell, Johnathan Padgett and
Preston Jones all scored, extending the Thorobreds' lead to 6-0.
After a single run from Clark Atlanta in the bottom of the third, Kentucky State answered as Padgett grounded to third base, sending Jones home and adding one run to the Thorobreds' 7-1 lead in the top of the fourth.
Kentucky State added three runs in the fifth inning, beginning with a Clark Atlanta error that brought in Endo. Jones drove in Christophel and Major on a single into right-center field, giving the Thorobreds a 10-1 advantage.
Clark Atlanta added two runs in the fifth and sixth innings before Padgett singled through the left side, bringing in Wooldridge and extending Kentucky State's lead to 11-3.
Christophel went yard in the top of the ninth inning to add the second home run of the afternoon and give the Thorobreds a 12-4 lead heading into the bottom of the inning. Clark Atlanta found a late surge, scoring two runs on a double and one run on a single, but came up short as Kentucky State won 12-7.
Brad Dossett earned the win on the mound, striking out seven batters in eight innings.
GAME TWO
In the final game of the doubleheader, Kentucky State rallied with five runs in the seventh inning to defeat Clark Atlanta 11-8.
The Panthers struck first, scoring three runs on a pair of errors from the Thorobreds to take a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Kentucky State responded by scoring two runs as both Endo and Garland scored on a single into left field by
Cameron McDonald, bringing the Thorobreds within one of the Panthers' 3-2 lead.
In the third inning, Campbell singled into center field to bring Padgett home and tie the game at 3-3. Major grounded out to the shortstop but drove in Campbell to give the Thorobreds a 4-3 edge.
Clark Atlanta tied the game at 4-4, then regained an 8-4 lead following a Kentucky State error and a two-run home run.
Harrison Barnes responded with a two-run home run into left field, bringing the Thorobreds within two at 8-6 through six innings.
In the top of the seventh inning, Campbell scored on a passed ball, followed by a double into left field from Endo that sent Smith home to tie the contest at 8-8.
Zion Lewis hit a sacrifice fly into center field to give the Thorobreds a one-run lead, 9-8, as Endo scored. An error by Clark Atlanta brought in McDonald for insurance. A single through the left side from Wooldridge that scored Duncan sealed an 11-8 victory for Kentucky State.
