FRANKFORT Ky. - The National College Association of Athletics (NCAA) named Kentucky State University baseball team star first baseman Joseph Esparza the national statistical champion for Runs Batted In (RBI) per game.

During the 2023 season, he played in 43 games; he held a .428 batting average leading to 73 RBIs and an average of 1.70 runs batted in per game to lead NCAA Division II nationally.

He also led the Thorobreds with 16 home runs, finishing 14th nationally in .37 home runs per game.

Esparza's achievements did not go unnoticed, as he was named the 2023 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Baseball Player of the Year.

In response to the achievement, Head Coach of the Thorobreds Robert Henry said, "It was a special experience to have a front-row view as Joe had one of the best offensive seasons ever in Kentucky State University baseball history."
