Poullard Goes Yard as Baseball Drops Matchup with Cedarville, 10-7

Box Score
Cincinnati, Ohio.—Kentucky State University dropped a 10-7 contest to Cedarville University at Gendall Family Field, located at the Cincinnati Reds Urban Youth Academy on Wednesday afternoon.

The Thorobreds (16-27, 10-5) had previously won three consecutive contest, going into the afternoon matinee with Yellow Jackets. On Apr. 11 KSU dropped the first matchup of the season at CU, 10-7.

"Our pitching put us in a hole early," said head coach Rob Henry. "Our offense seemed to wake up in the later innings, but it was too little too late for us in the long run. Now, we have to prepare for a major conference series this weekend against Spring Hill College."

CU jumped out to an early lead on senior starting pitcher Eric Anderson, as the Yellow Jackets accumulated a 7-0 lead through the first three innings. Junior pitcher Chae Butler came on in relief in the fourth, as the Yellow Jackets added another run to make it 8-0.

Junior catcher Greg Alexander provided a spark for the Thorobreds' lineup as he swatted a two-run double to left center field, scoring junior center fielder Elijah Collins and senior third baseman Brandon Story. The two-bagger by Alexander cut the defect to 8-2.

Butler allowed another run in the top of sixth before being pulled for sophomore pitcher Joe Crisp. The Shelbyville, Kentucky native pitched a scoreless inning and two-thirds as KSU tried to claw back against CU. Story recorded a RBI single to center field, scoring Collins from second base in the bottom of the sixth, bringing KSU a run close at 9-3.

CU added a run in the eighth for a 10-3 lead, but KSU would not remain down for the count, scoring three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Freshman left fielder Cameron Hughes delivered a two-RBI single to right field, followed by a RBI single by Collins to left field, accounting for the three runs.

Senior pitcher Josh Dunn pitched a perfect ninth inning, keeping the Thorobreds comeback hopes within slam range. Sophomore right fielder Jay Poullard provided a charge with a solo home run to left field, his first of the season, pulling KSU within three at 10-7. The Thororbreds continued to threaten with two runners on and sending the tying run to the plate with two outs, but Hughes went down swinging on strikes for a Yellow Jackets win.

Poullard finished his day along with four other Thorobreds with multi-hit games. Poullard and sophomore second baseman Russell Sims went 2-for-4, while Hughes, sophomore first baseman Artie Santomo, and sophomore designated hitter Bryan Wilson went 2-for-5 from the plate.

KSU will host newly appointed SIAC member, Spring Hill College with a three-game series this weekend. A doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday at 1 pm ET.
