FRANKFORT, Ky. – Women student-athletes of Kentucky State University celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) spending time with the students at Collins Lane Elementary in Frankfort, Kentucky.
Student-athletes introduced and demonstrated fun workouts and activities and followed with a questions and answers session to explain the importance of being a woman in sports.
Student of Collins Lane enjoyed their time as they asked, "Can we do this every week?!".
"This was a really great experience! I came up with this idea a few days ago, and seeing it come to life feels amazing. Getting to spend time with the girls and watching them compete and cheer each other on impacted me just as much as I hope we impacted them." SAAC representative and women's basketball student-athlete
Nya Caruthers said.
"Celebrating this National Day for Girls and Women Sports is one of my favorite things about my professional career! I can't even begin to describe all the many ways that being an athlete has impacted my life in a positive way. Sharing this day with my student-athletes from K-State and these wonderful girls in our community makes it extra special. These activities keep me grounded and help me remember why we do what we do. It's also a moment I always reflect on how grateful I am for Title IX, trailblazers in women sports, and the advocates and continual supporters of female athletes." Associate Athletic Director and Senior Women's Administrator said.
Founded in 1987, NGWSD began as a special day to recognize women's sports. Organizations and female athletes united to bring national attention of girls and women in sports. The event has evolved to acknowledge the accomplishments of female athletes and the positive influence of sports participation.
