Box Score RICHMOND, KY – The Kentucky State University baseball team dropped a non-conference game Wednesday, 9-3, to Division I Eastern Kentucky at Turkey Hughes Field.
The Colonels claimed the lead on the strength of some two-out offense as their first six runs all came with two outs. Eastern Kentucky tallied a single run in the second, two in the third and three in the fifth, all after the first two outs were recorded. A three-run home run in the seventh capped the EKU scoring.
Kentucky State scored its first run of the game on a two-out double by senior
Russell Sims (Harrodsburg, KY) in the six inning. Junior
Brandon Mason (Chattanooga, TN), who reached on catcher's interference, scored on the play.Â
The first two batters reached in the ninth, a single by Mason and a walk of freshman
Aram Kumar (Georgetown, KY) to kick start a scoring inning. They both came around to score on a pinch-hit double by freshman
Dakota Dull (Owensboro, KY).
Sims was responsible for two of Kentucky State's five hits as senior
Jordan Ransom (Ringgold, GA), Mason and Dull all had knocks.
Sophomore
De'Nayus Johnson, 2-1, (Detroit, MI) took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
Kentucky State, ranked first in the most recent Black College Nines poll, falls to 10-4-1 on the season. The Thorobreds begin Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action with a four-game weekend series with Morehouse.
Senior
Joe Crisp (Shelbyville, KY) and junior
Greg Tye (Knoxville, TN) are slated to pitch in Saturday's doubleheader. The first game begins at noon.
