Augusta, Ga.—Kentucky State University baseball dropped its second game of the SIAC tournament to LeMoyne-Owen College 22-3 at Lake Olmstead Stadium, putting an end to the 2017 season.
The Thorobreds (20-34, 12-9) recorded one of their most successful seasons since becoming a NCAA Division II institution in the late 1980s. KSU picked up the most wins against conference opponents with 12 wins during the regular season and two in the SIAC tournament. The 2017 campaign also marked the first 20-win season under head coach
Rob Henry and the program's first since 1988.
"Today doesn't overshadow what we accomplished this season," said Henry. "Our program took a step in the right direction, and we're going to continue to build on it. This senior class set a standard for years to comes."
LOC jumped out with a run in the first inning, followed by two in the second inning for an early 3-0 advantage.
KSU answered quickly in the top of the third inning as junior center field
Elijah Collins, junior starting pitcher/designated hitter
Justin Stinson, and senior third baseman
Brandon Story all recorded RBIs tying the contest at 3-3.
The bottom of the third proved to be a turning point for the Magicians as they scored six runs against Stinson for an 8-3 lead. As the Thorobreds were held scoreless through the next four frames, LOC scored a combined 13 runs against a host of Thorobreds coming out of the bullpen. Of the 13 runs, only four were scored as earned runs as the KSU defense allowed seven errors on the day.
Collins led the team with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, the lone Thorobred to record a multi-hit game. He also picked up his 33rd stolen base of the season.
