Baseball Tries to Play Comeback but Falls Short in Doubleheader to WVSU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Frankfort, Ky. -  Kentucky State University baseball fell to West Virginia State University in a non-conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

The Thorobreds will face-off against the Yellow Jackets again tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.

Game 1: WVSU 7  KSU 6

The bats were hot for the home squad in the first inning. With a runner on second and the home team behind 1-0, senior third baseman Brandon Story recorded his 14th RBI of the year, blasting a singled to left field to tie it up at one apiece in the bottom of the first.

Senior pitcher Josh Dunn carried the Thorobreds' momentum in the top half of the second, striking out two batters to keep the score at 1-1.

Dunn was stellar in the top of the third, forcing three straight ground outs to get KSU out of the inning unscathed.

WVSU capitalized on some miscues by the home squad in the top of the fourth, scoring five runs off four errors by the Thorobreds.

KSU (4-14) chipped away at the Yellow Jacket lead in the bottom of the fifth as freshman outfielder Cameron Hughes singled to drive in the runner on second to make the score 6-2. Hughes scored later in the inning following a sacrifice fly by Story to cut the visitors' lead to 6-3 heading into the top of the sixth.

After giving up a run in the sixth to trail 7-3, the Thorobreds fought back in the bottom of the seventh. With runners on first and second, Story drove in his third run of the game, drilling a double to left field to make the score 7-4. Junior catcher Greg Alexander scored Story off a sacrifice fly to centerfield to cut the WVSU lead to just two. Sophomore Jay Poullard continued the big inning for KSU, knocking in Alexander with a single to trail 7-6.

Despite the late surge by the Thorobreds, the home squad was unable to pick up the win, dropping the first game of the day.

Dunn was handed his second loss of the season, striking out six and walking one while allowing only one earned run in the contest. Story went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs while junior outfielder Elijah Collins went 3-for-4 in the loss for KSU.

Game 2: WVSU 15  KSU 2

KSU (4-15) struggled against the Yellow Jackets' hot bats early on in the first frame, giving up three runs off three hits and a walk before junior pitcher Chae Butler took control, striking out two,  to end the inning.

The Thorobreds picked up their first run of the game in the bottom of the second after a fielder's choice with the bases loaded by sophomore second baseman Russell Sims scored Alexander. Hughes smashed in a single to right center field to drive in Sims cut the visitors' lead to 4-2.

KSU could not combat the WVSU offense, as the visitors scored 11 runs in the final four innings to hand the Thorobreds its second loss of the afternoon.
