Volleyball falls to both UNH and OBU 3-0 in the Eckerd Classic

St. Petersburg, Fla.—Kentucky State University volleyball fell 3-0 (25-11, 25-16, 25-15) in its opening match of the Eckerd Classic against New Haven University and suffered the same 3-0 defeat (25-12, 25-12, 25-16) to Oklahoma Baptist University in the second match of the doubleheader on Friday.

The Thorobrettes will be back in action on Saturday to wrap up the Eckerd Classic when they take on the University of North Carolina- Pembroke at 10 a.m. ET, followed by the final match at 3:00 pm ET against host Eckerd College.

Game 1 UNH 3 KSU 0 (25-11, 25-16, 25-15)

UNH jumped out to an early lead in the first set 10-1, with six of the 10 points coming off errors from KSU. The Thorobrettes committed 19 total errors compared to the Charges seven in the match.

The second set featured only three total errors for KSU, keeping the match within striking distance, but with the match favoring UNH at 10-7, the Chargers started to pull away outscoring the Thorobrettes 16-9 for the set win.

KSU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the third set but saw it fizzle away on 11-2 run by UNH. Much like the first set, KSU couldn't overcome the self-imposed errors as they collected eight in the match.

Sophomore middle blocker Payton Richardson picked up where she left off in 2015 recording seven kills on 14 total attempts, racking up a .357 hitting efficiency in the contest. Senior outside hitter Tahje Ochs followed up with six kills of her own and added seven digs.

Senior setter Anjelique Kyle collected 22 of the team's 25 assists in the match.

Game 2 OBU 3 KSU 0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-16)

KSU and OBU battled in the opening set to an 11-10 score before the Bison went on the attack and ended the set on a 14-2 run, claiming the first set 25-12.

Errors came back to haunt the Thorobrettes in the second set as they collected 13 faults in the 25-12 defeat.

The mistakes were limited to only five in the third set as the Thorobrettes battled to a 25-16 loss.

Senior middle blocker Kirtrice Ploucha led the way for KSU with six kills on 25 total attacks. Kyle matched her performance from the first match notching 18 assists and added 10 digs.
