FRANKFORT, Ky. – Kentucky State women's volleyball closed the regular season with back-to-back sweeps after a 3-0 (25-15, 25-9, 25-10) victory over LeMoyne-Owen on Saturday at Bell Gymnasium.
The Thorobreds opened the first set with an early 6-3 lead behind kills from
Cydne Clayton and
Ananiah Huguely, then surged ahead with a 6-0 run fueled by service aces from
Erin Grieb and
Amber Gregory to take control 12-6. A pair of kills by
Leah Tubbs and
Laila Wheaton, followed by a Wheaton ace, helped Kentucky State close the set 25-15.
In the second set, Clayton dominated at the net, recording multiple kills as the Thorobreds jumped out to a 9-2 advantage. Wheaton added a service ace and Knight delivered precise setting to
Jayla Collins and Tubbs, extending the margin to 18-6. Kentucky State finished the set on a 7-3 run, capped by a Collins kill to win 25-9.
The Thorobreds carried their momentum into the third, taking a 7-3 lead on early kills from Wheaton, Huguely, and
Sydnee Breda-Nixon. Stewart's ace and Gregory's service run stretched the lead to 20-7 before Huguely sealed the sweep with her fifth kill of the set for a 25-10 final.
Kentucky State tallied 41 kills and hit .432 as a team. Clayton led the attack with 10 kills on a .444 hitting percentage, followed by Wheaton with eight kills. Knight paced the offense with 21 assists, while Stewart added 15.
Defensively, Gregory and Grieb shared the match high with eight digs apiece, helping Kentucky State limit LeMoyne-Owen to a .000 team hitting percentage.
