Box Score 4 The Kentucky State volleyball team swept through the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East/West Crossover over the weekend, winning all six of its matches and improving its conference record to 12-0.
The Thorobrettes opened the weekend with victories over Paine and Benedict on Thursday, then followed it up by defeating Fort Valley State and host Albany State on Friday. On Saturday, Kentucky State defeated defending SIAC champion Claflin 3-0 in a rematch of last season's conference championship game, then wrapped up the tournament with a win over Clark Atlanta.
"I am extremely proud of my team and the way they worked together and stayed poised to put together six matches in one weekend," said head coach
Christina Coleman.
The team is off to one of the best starts in program history after opening the season by sweeping six matches in the SIAC West Division Cluster on Sept. 11-12. With the results, Kentucky State has defeated every school in the conference other than Central State, which it has yet to play. Along the way, the Thorobrettes have picked up wins over the only SIAC teams to defeat them last season in Spring Hill and Claflin.
Though her team is off to quite a successful start to the 2015 season, Coleman is focused on keeping her team grounded and not looking ahead. With her team winning three of the last five SIAC titles and sitting atop the standings again this season, she notes that the Thorobrettes will get the best effort from any conference opponent.
"Even though we have had a great start this season, I'm just trying to keep these ladies working hard and staying focused on our goals," Coleman added. "I explain to my ladies that we have to pay attention to the small details because no matter who our opponent is, they always seem to play their best volleyball against us."
The Thorobrettes are back in action this week with a trip to face St. Catharine College on Tuesday before hosting Centre College on Wednesday at the Exum Center at 7 p.m. The team has a two week break in conference play before putting its 12-0 record on the line with six matches at the SIAC West Cluster at Spring Hill College on Oct. 16-17.
