Box Score ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -- The Kentucky State volleyball team picked up its first non-conference victory of the season with a 3-2 win over Saint Joseph's College on Friday as part of the Lewis University Tri-Match.
The match was also the first time the Thorobrettes have gone to five sets this year. After winning the first set 25-20 and falling behind when the Pumas won the second and third sets 25-16 and 25-23 respectively, Kentucky State battled back. Kentucky State won 25-16 in the fourth set to even the match, then pulled out a 15-12 victory in the decisive fifth set to win the match.
Trailing two sets to one and down 13-12 in the fourth set, the turning point for the Thorobrettes came when they scored seven straight points to go up 19-12. Kentucky State then finished the set with three kills by
Tahje Ochs and two from
Micah Rogers.
In the final set, it was again two kills by Ochs that sparked a 4-0 run to put the Thorobrettes up 8-4. Though Saint Joseph's pulled within one at 13-12, Kentucky State was able to seal the victory on a
Kirtrice Ploucha kill and a Pumas attack error.
Ploucha and Rogers each had 16 kills to lead Kentucky State, while Ochs added 12.
Anjelique Kyle had a game-high 43 assists, while
Kiara Rivera led all players with 28 digs.
Kentucky State improves to 13-5 overall on the season, while Saint Joseph's drops to 4-8. The Thorobrettes are back in action with two more matches today, taking on host Lewis University at 11 a.m. and University of Indianapolis at 5 p.m.
