Baseball Splits Mondays Doubleheader Against LeMoyne-Owen, Takes Two of Three in Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 FRANKFORT, Ky. -- After splitting a doubleheader on Monday afternoon the Kentucky State University baseball team took two of three games against the LeMoyne-Owen Magicians in their three-game SIAC series.
 
Kentucky State improves their overall record to 8-27 and moves to 5-9 in SIAC play. LeMoyne-Owen drops to 6-21, 3-7 in SIAC action.
 
GAME 1
In Sunday's opening game of the series, KSU got a 9.0 inning complete game shutout from starting pitcher Cornell Brown to earn the 4-0 victory for the Thorobreds.
 
Brown (4-3) allowed just six hits while striking out five on his way to the victory.
 
Leftfielder Alexander Davie and third baseman Josh O'Reel both picked up a pair of hits and an RBI each.
 
Starting second baseman Kyle Clark picked up a pair of stolen bases against LOC to pressure the Magicians on the bases.
 
LeMoyne-Owen starter Darryl Dunbar was given the loss after tossing 8.0 innings. Dunbar allowed two earned runs, six hits and six walks against KSU.
 
GAME 2
The teams returned to the field for a doubleheader on Monday afternoon. LeMoyne-Owen picked up a 3-1 victory in game one.
 
In the top of the first, LeMoyne-Owen's Anthony Owen hit a triple to put the Magicians in scoring position. The next LOC batter, Jorrel Johnson, hit what looked to be a routine pop-up but miscommunication allowed the ball to drop and Owen to score putting the Magicians ahead, 1-0.
 
After both teams were held scoreless through the top of the sixth inning, the Thorobreds got a lead-off triple from Kyle Clark who smashed the LOC offering to the left-center wall. Next up was senior Mike Swayne who hit a ball over the left fielders head to score Clark and tie the game at, 1-1.
 
In the top of the seventh and final inning, LOC loaded the bases before Owen hit a key single up the middle that scored a pair of runs for LOC, putting the Magicians ahead, 3-1.
 
In the bottom of the inning, Matt Freire hit a lead-off single to bring the tying run to the plate. LeMoyne-Owen locked down defensively and picked up a 5-4-3 double play before LOC starting pitcher Johnson Wyant picked up his eighth strikeout to close out the game.
 
Wyant earned the victory after tossing 7.0 effective innings. He allowed eight hits but didn't allow a walk.
 
AJ Garza-Hall (0-5) was given the loss after throwing all 7.0 innings. Garza-Hall allowed eight hits, three walks and struck out four.
 
GAME 3
The teams went back-and-forth in the final game of the series.
 
After both teams picked up a run in the first inning, the Magicians went ahead 3-1 in the top of the third.
 
The Thorobreds responded in the bottom of the inning with a four run outburst to take a 5-3 lead before the start of the fourth inning. Kyle Clark picked up an RBI single by bringing home Justin Cain who had reached base on a lead-off double. Mike Swayne batted in a pair of runs when he hit a double off the center field wall to score Clark and Alexander Davie. Marshall Howard IV then hit a shallow ball of leftfield that the LOC leftfielder had trouble with allowing Swayne to score from second.
 
LOC took back the lead in the top of the fourth with four runs of their own to go into the bottom of the fourth inning with a 7-5 lead.
 
In the top of the fifth, the Magicians tacked on two more runs when a Lawrence Baker 2-run homerun extended the LeMoyne-Owen lead to 9-5.
 
After holding LOC scoreless in the top of the sixth inning, the Thorobreds used five hits and an LOC error to explode for six runs in the bottom of the inning and take back the lead at, 11-9.
 
Cody Pfaadt (1-4) earned the victory for KSU after tossing 3.1 innings of relief. Pfaadt allowed just four hits and two earned runs in his time on the mound.
 
Scotty Myracle was given the loss for the Magicians after allowing four earned runs in just .2 innings.

The Thorobreds will host the University of Cincinnati-Clermont tomorrow, Apr. 1, for a single game at 2 p.m.
