Box Score 2 CEDARVILLE, Ohio -- In temperatures that hovered around freezing throughout the day, the Kentucky State baseball team earned a doubleheader split against the Cedarville University Yellow Jackets on Wednesday afternoon at Yellow Jacket Field.
KSU pushes its record to 5-26 overall this season while Cedarville moves to 13-9.
GAME 1Cedarville used a big sixth innings to win game one of Wednesday's doubleheader, 8-3.
Cody Pfaadt (0-4) was saddled with the loss after allowing eight hits and seven earned runs in 5.1 innings of work. Pfaadt allowed just three runs while striking out a season high five batters in the first five innings but ran into trouble in the sixth inning.
Cedarville opened the game up with five runs in the sixth inning to take a commanding 8-1 lead.
The Thorobreds didn't go down quietly though. In the top of the seventh,
Cornell Brown and
Justin Cain (3-for-4) both reached base safely with no outs. A throwing error by CU third baseman Drew Johnson allowed
Kyle Clark to reach first and bring home Brown and Cain to cut the Yellow Jackets lead to 8-3. Cedarville clamped down though, and held on for the game one victory.
GAME 2The Thorobreds bounced back in game two, getting strong pitching performances from the duo of
Cornell Brown and
Joey Pierce III, to earn the 5-1 victory.
KSU starting pitcher Brown (3-3) allowed just one hit in 4.0 innings of work and Pierce III entered the game in the fifth inning allowing just three hits in 3.0 innings to preserve the Thorobred victory.
After a scoreless opening four innings, Kentucky State got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning. With the bases loaded freshman centerfielder
Darius Hughes laid down a sacrifice bunt to score
Mike Swayne (2-for-4, 2 runs) from third and break the scoreless tie. Singles from Mike Marsh and
Justin Cain brought two more KSU runs across the plate to put the Thorobreds ahead, 3-0, before the end of the inning.
Cedarville picked up their only run of the game in the bottom of the innings when first baseman Chris Fox hit two-out single that scored Drew Johnson from second.
The Thorobreds tacked on runs in the sixth and seventh innings to lock up the 5-1 win.
Cain, Hughes, Marsh and
Kyle Clark all collect a single RBI in Monday's finale.
