FRANKFORT, Ky. – Kentucky State picked up two much needed victories in their home opening series against the Asbury University Eagles. The Thorobreds dominated game one, coming away with a 9-1 victory. KSU scored six runs in the final two innings of game two which helped secure the 6-3 victory and complete the series sweep.
In game one, Kentucky State (2-7) used a mix of potent offense and solid pitching to defeat Asbury University (4-16).
Joe Dotson (2-1) held the Asbury batters in check throughout the game. Dotson pitched a seven inning complete game allowing just two hits and one run during his seven innings of work.
Asbury's Isaiah Bell (0-5) was given the loss for game one after pitching four innings, giving up four hits and two earned runs.
Senior
Jacob Brackett led the way offensively for Kentucky State going 3-for-4 from the plate and driving in two RBI. Brackett's first hit of the game was a single in the first inning which scored
Alexander Davie and gave KSU the first lead of the game. Sophomore
Reginald Grimes II went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
One series of plays that summed up game one was, in the bottom of the sixth inning when third basemen
Kyle Clark got hit by a pitch. After taking his base at first, Clark proceeded to steal second, then, on the very next play, easily stole third base. The next batter up,
Marshall Howard IV, singled through the left side bringing Clark home from third.
In the second game of the day, Kentucky State (3-7) rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the bottom of the fifth inning to defeat Asbury (4-17).
Sophomore
Arefes Everette (2-2) earned the victory for KSU after pitching six solid innings, allowing six hits and just one earned run.
Logan Howard was saddled with the loss for the Eagles after pitching six innings, allowing seven hits and six earned runs.
Preseason SIAC All-Conference player
Alexander Davie went 3-for-2 from the plate, driving in two RBI. In the bottom of the fifth inning, with the score tied at 2-2, Davie hit a single that scored
Ben Schroeder and
Justin Cain.
The Thorobreds are scheduled to be back on the field this Tuesday, March 5, when they host a doubleheader against the University of the Cumberlands starting at 1 p.m.
