Box Score OZARK, Ala. (April 28, 2012)—Kentucky State University's baseball squad battled Miles College for the fourth time this year in the elimination round of the 2012 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship Tournament. Coming into the game, the Thorobreds led the series 2-1 this year, having defeated the Golden Bears 7-4, 6-1 and losing 3-13 in a three-game home series. Today, Miles evened the series 2-2 with a10-2 win over the Thorobreds in an elimination game.
The Golden Bears scored first after Justin Langdale singled through the left side, then Kelend Smith doubled through the right side to score Langdale. After Justin Bartley reached on a Breds' throwing error, a wild pitch advanced him to third and scored Smith. Miles would add two more runs in the bottom of the second inning after a few singles that scored Courtney Kelley and Mason Davis, giving Miles a 4-0 lead.
KSU would score it's first run in the top of the third inning as Ben Schroeder singled down the left field line to score
Bryan Berry. In the bottom of the third, Miles added another two runs in the fourth and then one more run in the bottom of the fifth to take a 9-1 lead.
The score remained 9-1 until the top of the eighth. A fielding error led Schroeder to get on base and advance to second. Mike Swayne then hit a sacrifice fly to center field and Schroeder adavanced to third.
Raphael Amey then singled through the left side to score Schroeder, bringing the score to 2-9.
In the bottom of the eighth, Miles' Joshua Grooms tripled to left field with one out. Kevin Harris, pinch hitting for Tamile Sims, struck out swinging, but Howard dropped the ball. Howard threw out Harris at first, but Harris was able to score on the throw, giving the Golden Bears a 10-2 lead.
KSU batted again in the top of the ninth inning, but they were unable to score, giving Miles the 10-2 victory. Berry ended with two hits and scored one run, while Amey and Schroeder accounted for both of KSU's RBIs. KSU had a total of 10 hits. Arefes Everett pitched three innings, giving up seven runs and seven hits. Jamaal Duncan pitched five innings and gave up three runs on five hits.
The Thorobreds end the 2012 campaign 13-28 overall, their most wins since 2004 when they went 13-15. The Breds' win over Paine in the opening round of this year's tournament was their first tournament win was in 2007 when they defeated LeMoyne-Owen College 10-3 in the first round of the tournament.
