Raphael Amey Named SIAC West Division Player of the Week

Atlanta, GA—Benedict third baseman/catcher Brandon Gipson has been SIAC Baseball East Division Player of the Week while teammate Eric Cordova has been named SIAC East Division Pitcher of the Week. Kentucky State outfielder Raphael Amey and Stillman pitcher Josh Cagle have been named SIAC Baseball West Division Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week respectively.

Gipson, a native of Detroit, MI, earned his third player of the week honor this season by going 7-for-12 from the plate, including a home run, a triple, and a double, with a .583 batting average and a 1.083 slugging percentage. The 6-5 senior, who had an on-base percentage of .643, drove in two runs and stole six bases while also scoring seven runs. Defensively, Gipson was perfect in the field with a 1.000 fielding percentage. He helped lead Benedict to a 4-0 record for the week, their ninth straight win overall, including a 14-0 win over Winston Salem State and three-game series sweep over Paine.

Cordova, a 5-8 senior, pitched 11 total innings with 13 strikeouts, including a complete game shutout against Winston Salem State where he struck out nine batters. The Los Angeles, CA native went 1-0 for the week with a 2.45 ERA.

Amey, a native of Dumfries, VA, recorded 15 hits, including three triples and three doubles, with a .536 batting average and a .857 slugging percentage in seven appearances. The 6-2 junior, who had a .533 on-base percentage, drove in 11 runs, scored 10 runs, and stole eight bases. Amey was solid defensively with a .875 fielding percentage while helping lead the Thorobreds to a three-game sweep over conference foe LeMoyne-Owen College.

Cagle, a native of Brookwood, AL, pitched seven scoreless innings with nine strikeouts against Miles College. The 5-11 left-hander went 1-0 for the week to improve his record to 5-2 on the season with a 3.00 ERA.
