Thorobreds Drop Doubleheader to Benedict College

FRANKFORT, Ky.--Today the Kentucky State University Thorobreds were visited by the Benedict College Tigers from Columbia, South Carolina. The Breds and Tigers were set for a doubleheader with a start time of 12 noon for the first pitch. At game time, the weather was cold (35 degrees) and windy.

The starting pitchers for the first game were Ricardo Vasquez (Gary, IN)(KSU) vs. Jordan (BC). Benedict jumped to early lead, scoring one run in the first inning then another 6 runs in the second on 6 hits and 3 errors. The next three innings went quiet with Benedict scoring only one run while KSU remained scoreless.

In the last inning Benedict picked up 4 more runs on 5 hits to end game one of the double header with a final score of 12 – 0 in favor of Benedict College. Vasquez was the loosing pitcher for KSU with 7 innings, 14 hits, and 10 earned runs. Jordan picked up the win for Benedict pitching 7 innings, 1 hit, and 0 runs.

Game 2 started at 3:00 pm. The starting pictures for the second match were Wilson (KSU) vs. Lewis BC.

Benedict jumped to an early lead scoring 4 runs in the first inning. KSU fought back in the third inning with a couple of lead off walks for the Breds. With two runners on base and one already scoring Bryan Berry (Cincinnati, OH) came in with a clutch single to bring the game within reach with score of 4 to 3.

Benedict went on to score 4 runs in the 4th inning and 1 in both the 5th and 7th innings to take a 10 – 3 lead. Down to their final 3 outs, KSU attempted to rally back; however, the Tigers played tough defense making the Breds go 3 up 3 down to end the ball game. Kendall Wilson (Chicago, IL) (0-3) was the loosing pitcher for KSU with 6 innings, 7 hits, and 8 earned runs. Lewis pitched a complete game for Benedict giving up 3 runs on 4 hits.

The Breds and Tigers will battle once again tomorrow at 1:00 pm at Thorobred field.
