Kentucky State Track and Field Sets Records, Finishes Fourth at SIAC Indoor Championship

LOUSIVILLE, Ky. – Kentucky State Track and Field delivered a record-setting, podium filled performances at the 2026 SIAC Indoor Track and Field Championship
 
The Thorobreds crowned multiple conference champions, set meet records and added several top-three finishes while scoring key points in sprints, field events and relays. Zhakeya Hawkins and Jaaliyah Biggers captured titles on Day 1, while Yumana Lofton's meet-record run in the men's 200 meters highlighted the final day.
 
Both Kentucky State men's and women's teams finished fourth in the final standings. Morehouse claimed the men's conference title, while Tuskegee captured the women's championship.
 
DAY ONE
Kentucky State opened the first day of the championship with three Thorobreds reaching the podium.
 
Zhakeya Hawkins not only set a meet record but also became a conference champion in the women's pole vault. Her teammate, Jaaliyah Biggers, secured the conference title in the women's long jump with a leap of 5.55 meters (18 feet, 2 1/2 inches). Dewayne Davis was the final Thorobred on the podium, finishing second in the men's weight throw with a mark of 14.26 meters (46 feet, 9 1/2 inches).
 
The success continued throughout the day as Andrew Bownes recorded a throw of 13.58 meters (44 feet, 6 3/4 inches) to earn a fourth-place finish in the men's weight throw.
 
In the men's long jump, Shamond McClain finished sixth with a leap of 6.83 meters (22 feet, 5 inches).
 
A pair of Thorobreds finished inside the top 10 in the women's weight throw. Desire Poole placed eighth with a throw of 11.83 meters (38 feet, 9 3/4 inches), followed by Shanell Laws in ninth at 11.56 meters (37 feet, 11 1/4 inches).
 
The distance medley relays rounded out the day. The women's team finished fourth with a time of 14:55.15, while the men placed sixth in 13:02.29.
 
At the end of Day 1, the women's team totaled 26 points, tying for fourth with Allen. Tuskegee led with 70 points. The men entered Day 2 with 19 points, good for fifth place. Morehouse led the men's standings with 30 points.
 
DAY TWO
On the final day of the SIAC Indoor Track and Field Championship, the Thorobreds set a meet record and reached the podium in several events.
In the men's 60-meter hurdles, Jadon Wright placed fifth in 8.42. Yumana Lofton added a fourth-place finish in the men's 60-meter dash, clocking 6.98 in the finals.
 
Lofton went on to capture the conference title in the men's 200 meters, setting a meet record with a time of 21.30.

In the women's 400 meters, Tahja Mims led the way with a third-place finish in 57.58, while Hawkins placed seventh in 59.11. Mims continued her strong showing in the women's 200 meters, taking fifth in 25.90.

Both Lenayah Thomas and Laila Jackson advanced to the finals of the women's 800 meters. Thomas finished fifth in 2:33.97, and Jackson placed eighth in 2:45.10.

The Thorobreds' 4x400-meter relay team of Zhakeya Hawkins, Tahja Mims, Bailiy Graham and Armoni Glenn capped the day with a second-place finish, crossing the line in 4:02.69.
