PUEBLO, Colo. — Kentucky State track and field sophomore
Yumana Lofton will begin his quest for a national title on Friday, May 23, in the first round of the men's 200-meter dash at 7:45 p.m. ET at the CSU Pueblo ThunderBowl.
Lofton qualified for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a personal-best and school-record time of 20.71 seconds, achieved at the Sycamore Open earlier this season.
"Since being here at nationals I have been overjoyed," Lofton said. "Once I stepped on the track, I enjoyed the camaraderie shared with other student-athletes as we all look to be successful this week."
Earlier this week, Lofton and head coach
Ramon Johnson took part in a community service event with local youth in Pueblo.
"It was fun to spend time and get to know the youth of this community," Lofton said.
Lofton has enjoyed a breakout sophomore campaign, highlighted by strong performances at the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Championships in April. He placed second in both the 100 meters (10.34 seconds) and 200 meters (20.73 seconds).
Earlier in the season, he won the 200 meters at the Morehead State Eagle Twilight with a time of 21.37 seconds and clocked a wind-aided 10.40 in the 100 meters at the Jet Relays.
He also contributed to Kentucky State's relay teams, helping the Thorobreds place third in the 4x100-meter relay at the Jet Relays with a time of 41.51 seconds.
Lofton is scheduled to run in the first heat of the 200-meter dash on Friday. The event will be streamed live
