The Kentucky State University women's basketball team looks to get back on the winning track when the Thorobreds host Miles 1 p.m. Saturday. They will honor the contributions of senior
Vinsetta Covington,
Tara Jefferson and
Brooke Wallace in a pregame ceremony.
THE LAST MEETING: Â A 16-4 run in the fourth quarter run gave the Kentucky State University women's basketball team the boost they needed to pull the 57-42 upset victory over Miles College in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at the Knox Windham Gym on January 15.
The game-changing run coincided with the Thorobreds changing their defense, limiting Miles to just 2-of-11 from the floor and forcing six turnovers. While the KSU defense was smothering the hosts, the inside duo of seniorÂ
Brooke Wallace and juniorÂ
Kiante Butts combined to score 12 of the team's 16 points.
Wallace recorded her tenth double-double of the season with 14 points and 15 rebounds, marking the second straight game she has pulled down 15 boards. SophomoreÂ
Erica Jones added 13 points and seven rebounds, while juniorÂ
Jessie Kee finished with eight points and eight rebounds.
THE TEAMS: Kentucky State (13-11 overall, 6-9 SIAC) are in tied for fifth place in the West Division with the Spring Hill and Central State entering the last week of conference action. KSU swept the season series from Spring Hill and split with the Marauders.
Miles (15-8 overall, 8-7 SIAC) have rebounded from a midseason lull in which the Golden Bears lost six of eight games, and are now in the midst of winning five of the last six contests. The Golden Bears are currently third in the SIAC West.
THE COACHES:Â
Terrance Slater is in his third season as the head coach, and fifth season with the program. He led Kentucky State to the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference semifinals a season ago. He was an assistant the last time KSU advanced to the SIAC title game.
Phillip Wallace is in his 12th season as the women's basketball head coach at Miles.
THE PLAYERS: SeniorÂ
Brooke Wallace is one of four SIAC players averaging a double-double as the forward is scoring 13.0 points and pulling down 10.7 rebounds, both team highs.
JuniorÂ
Jessie Kee is the reigning back-to-back SIAC Newcomer of the Week. She averaged 21 points and 8.5 rebounds. It helped boost her season average to 11.6 points and 6.4 rebounds.
After missing three games, sophomoreÂ
Erica Jones returned to action in limited minutes. She is third on the team with 11.1 points and third with 5.9 rebounds.
