GAME PREVIEW: Central State

The Kentucky State University women's basketball team hosts Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Central State in the second of back-to-back games 5:30 p.m. Monday.

THE LAST MEETING: The Kentucky State University women's basketball team scored the first nine points of the fourth quarter to break a tie en route to the 71-58 victory over Central State in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at the Lewis Beacom Gymnasium Saturday.

The run, which finished at 15-3, started with a three-point play from junior Kiante Butts and then senior Brooke Wallace added an inside basket. Back-to-back fastbreak buckets by sophomore Erica Jones and junior Amani Williams led to a CSU timeout.
Wallace finished with her 13th double-double of the season with 20 points and 15 rebounds. It was the fourth time this season she tallied at least 20 points. Butts added her sixth double-double, the fifth in the last six games with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Kee tabulated a team-high 22 points to go along with nine rebounds. All eight players played and scored in the victory.

THE TEAMS: Kentucky State (13-10 overall, 6-8 SIAC) are in tied for fifth place in the West Division with the Spring Hill, which it holds the tiebreaker.

Central State (8-15 overall, 5-9 SIAC) comes into the game, losers in seven of the last 10 games, and in last place of the SIAC. The Marauders are second in the SIAC in scoring, but is last in scoring defense.

THE COACHES: Terrance Slater is in his third season as the head coach, and fifth season with the program. He led Kentucky State to the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference semifinals a season ago. He was an assistant the last time KSU advanced to the SIAC title game.

Latonya McDole is in her second season as the interim head coach after stepping into the role in February of 2018. She has been involved with the CSU basketball program for nine seasons. McDole led the Marauders to the SIAC title game last season.

THE PLAYERS: Senior Brooke Wallace is one of four SIAC players averaging a double-double as the forward is scoring 13.1 points and pulling down 10.5 rebounds, both team highs.
Junior Jessie Kee, the reigning SIAC Newcomer of the Week, is coming off a week in which she averaged 17 points and 13.5 rebounds for the Thorobreds. It helped boost her season average to 11.6 points and 6.4 rebounds.
Sophomore Erica Jones has missed three games, but before returning to action in limited minutes Saturday. The return dropped her season average to 11.1 points per game.
Junior Kiante Butts is second on the team in rebounding with 7.8 boards. She has recorded a double-double in five of the last six games.
Junior Amani Williams, who dished out a career-high 11 assists in the win over CSU, leads the team with 92 assists.
 
In Saturday's loss to KSU, Chervelle Cox led the Marauders with 17 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Falon Edwards added 14 points and six rebounds.
Leading scorer Takyra Gilbert (13.9 points per game) added eight points. Jaeda Davis is second on the team with 12.1 points, but was held to two points Saturday.
