The Kentucky State University cheerleading program will grow in size and stature starting in the beginning of the 2019-20 athletic season, according to head coach
Timothy Queen. The program will consists of three squads, gold, green and competitive cheer.
The Gold Squad will be composed of eight to ten females and eight to ten males, and will travel for all football, all men's basketball games and away women's basketball games. They will also make regular appearances representing the University at alumni, athletic, charitable, and public relations activities.
The Green squad, composed of ten to 12 females, cheers for some home football and home women's basketball games. The Green squad will not travel.
The competitive cheer team will be comprised of eight females and 8 males. It is required that each athlete on the competitive team can tumble and stunt. This squad is only for competition purposes and will practice separate from the other squads. However, a cheerleader can be a member of the green or gold squads as well.
Competitive cheerleading is when cheer squads compete against each other at a competition. At a typical cheerleading competition, teams perform a two to three minute routine with music that includes stunts, jumps, tumbling. Competitive cheerleading is a team sport requiring regular attendance by all team members.
Every cheerleader is expected to attend all practices, functions, performances and competitions.
The teams will be selected during the program's spring tryouts from March 22 to March 24. For tryout information,
