Midway, Ky.—Kentucky State University claimed its first victory of the season with a convincing 3-0 shutout on the road against Midway University, Tuesday night.
The Thorobrettes (1-0) and the Eagles (0-11) hadn't faced off in regular season play since 2014 when the Thorobrettes swept both match ups with 3-0 victories.
The first set went back and forth with four lead changes and three ties throughout, but KSU came on strong in the final moments to take the set 25-22.
The Eagles seemed to take control in the second set, leading 19-12. After a timeout by head coach
Katrina English, KSU went on a tear for a 13-6 run, to take the second set heading into the third and final set with momentum.
Trailing 12-8 in the final frame, the Thorobrettes repeated themselves with another strong surge, taking the set on a 17-7 run to sweep the hosting Eagles.
Leading the way for the visiting squad was sophomore setter,
Hannah Smyers. The Needville, Texas native shined in her debut with a team-high 18 assists, while finishing tied with a team-high nine kills, and second on the team in digs with seven.

Makayla Martin with nine kills. Sophomore libero
Aisha Cruz proved to be the top defensive threat for the Thorobrettes, accounting for 11 digs.
Next up for KSU will be the Kentucky Wesleyan Tournament in Owensboro, Kentucky where the Thorobrettes are scheduled for four matches over a two-day span, beginning on Sept. 8 against Bluefield State College at 12 pm ET.
