Indoor Track and Field Opens Season with the Tiffin Alumi Open

Tiffin, Ohio.—Kentucky State University men's and women's indoor track and field squads opened up the season with the Tiffin Alumni Open on Saturday in the Hemington Center.

"We have some technical improvements to work on, and we plan to do some polishing on both teams," said head coach Fatimah Shabazz. "We had several athletes compete in their first indoor meet, and that alone is an adjustment that takes time. We plan to continue our mission of excellence without excuses and build upon today's early foundation."

Junior Cameron Galloway surfaced as a top performer in the track events, as he came off an impressive debut with the KSU Cross Country team. Galloway finished second overall in the men's 600-meter event at 1:29.72, just a tick behind the first-place finisher Ethan Brakefield of Tiffin University at 1:29.72. In the one-mile run, Galloway shined again with a fifth-place finish with a time of 4:42.04.

For the Thorobrettes, senior Carissa Baker turned in a second-place finish in the women's 400 meters at 1:02.34, just under a second from the first-place position.

In the field events, both sophomore Kolan Livingston and freshman Angel Freeman exceeded in the shot put. Livingston tied a personal best with a final distance of 12.34 meters, a mark he set last season on Feb. 17 in the Ohio State College/University Tune-Up Invitational. Freeman debuted with a distance of 11.68 meters, for tops on the team in the event.

KSU will compete again in the new year of 2018 with the Historically Black Colleges and University Battle in New York, New York on Jan. 12.
