Tough Shooting Leads to WBB Dropping Contest to UAH, 64-52

Box Score Florence, Ala.—Kentucky State University women's basketball dropped its second consecutive contest to begin the 2017-18 season with a 64-52 loss to the University of Alabama in Huntsville on Saturday afternoon at the University of North Alabama.

The Thorobrettes (0-2) corrected the turnover issue that plagued them on Friday against UNA, by only allowing 14 turnovers, while forcing 21, but the long-range ball didn't fall, hitting just 1-of-18 from beyond the arc. The Lady Charges (2-0) hit six more three-point buckets than KSU and capitalized from the free-throw line by going 17-for-21 for 81 percent.

"We played well defensively but had an off shooting night, and you can't do that on the road," said head coach Terrance Slater.  "We'll come back and correct some of these things in practice to prepare for our game next Saturday."

The entire active roster for KSU got in the scoring column as 12 of 13 players scored for the Thorobrettes with senior shooting guard Brittani Rizzi leading the way with nine points. Junior guard Ka-Leah Ryan joined Rizzi as the only two players to record 25 minutes of action, scoring eight points and accounting for three assists.

Freshman forward Erica Jones crashed the boards for the green and gold with a team-high nine rebounds and two blocks.

KSU went to its calling card to stay with the Lady Chargers accounting for 36 points in the paint and 15-second-chance points, outdoing UAH in both categories. Guard Baylee Johnson was the difference maker for UAH as she scored a game-high 28 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the floor.

The Thorobrettes will have a week-long layover as they will host the University of Missouri-St. Louis for their home opener at the Exum Center on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 3 pm ET.
