Frankfort, Ky. – Kentucky State University women's basketball fell to Paine College 74-70 in overtime to begin SIAC play on Wednesday night in Augusta, Ga.
The Thorobreds were led by sophomore center
Brooke Wallace who netted a game-high 18 points and grabbed a team-high seven boards. Senior forward
Logan Powell added 12 points to go along with her four steals in the contest.
KSU jumped out to an early lead following a 10-0 run in the first 2:47 of the first quarter and rode the momentum into the second quarter. The Thorobrettes dominated the remainder of the quarter as they did not trail in the first half, taking a 37-33 lead into halftime.
PC jumped out to a strong start in the second half, going on a 14-3 run. The scoring drought for KSU ended after made a layup and successful free throw by senior forward
Aliyah Gipson cutting the Lady Lions lead to just two, making the score 46-44. The Thorobrettes' struggles continued for the remainder of the quarter, as they fell victim to a 7-0 stretch by the Lady Lions, leaving the Thorobrettes trailing 52-45 heading into the final frame of regulation.
Wallace anchored KSU in the final quarter, scoring nine of her 18 points to help the visitors tie the game up and force overtime.
The Thorobreds jumped out to a four-point advantage to begin the overtime period but were unable to capitalize as they dropped their first conference game of the season.
KSU will be on the road again as it visits Claflin University Thursday night in Orangeburg, S.C. at 5:30 p.m.
