Box Score FAIRFIELD, Ala. – The Kentucky State football team struggled to find its rhythm on offense in a 16-6 loss at Miles College on Saturday.
The Thorobreds held Miles scoreless for all of the second half, but the only points they scored came when
Lavelle Cloyd took a pass from
Ora Johnson and broke free for a 64 yard touchdown reception with just 38 seconds remaining in the game. Though the touchdown cut the margin to 16-6, the Thorobreds' two point conversion attempt was no good, and the ensuing onside kick bounced out of bounds, allowing Miles to run out the clock for the win.
For the game, Kentucky State managed just 197 yards of offense with nearly half of it coming on the final drive. Miles finished with 292 yards, with the Thorobreds holding the Golden Bears to just 46 after halftime.
Miles got its points early in the game and was able to hold on for the victory. The Golden Bears went ahead late in the first quarter when David Whipple found Devan Williams for a 52 yard touchdown. On the Bears' next series, they went 46 yards in seven plays with Whipple finding Trey Smith for a 16 yard touchdown to make the score 13-0. The final points for Miles came when Nick Christiansen made a 40 yard field goal with 2:28 remaining before halftime.
Individually, Cloyd led the Thorobreds in receiving with two catches for 78 yards and a touchdown, while
Reginal Harris was Kentucky State's top rusher with 52 yards on nine carries. Coming on in relief in the fourth quarter, Johnson completed four of seven passes for 99 yards and a touchdown. On defense,
Vincent Edwards led Kentucky State with 13 tackles, while
Nathaniel Robinson had nine tackles with three for loss.
With the loss, Kentucky State drops to 2-5 overall and 2-2 in SIAC play, while Miles improves to 3-4 overall and 3-1 in the conference. In the West Division standings, which determine the representative in the SIAC Championship Game, Miles moves to 2-0, while the Thorobreds drop to 1-1. Kentucky State is back in action when it hosts Tuskegee next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
