WILBERFORCE, Ohio  —  Kentucky State football will open its 2026 season Saturday, Aug. 29, when the Thorobreds travel to Wilberforce, Ohio, for a Week 0 matchup against SIAC rival Central State.
Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at McPherson Stadium.
 
The opener begins a new chapter for Kentucky State following a historic 2025 campaign in which the Thorobreds finished 9-3, won nine consecutive games during the regular season and earned the program's first NCAA Division II playoff appearance.
 
Last season established a new standard in Frankfort. Saturday provides the first opportunity for the 2026 Thorobreds to begin building an identity of their own.

A RIVALRY DEFINED BY DIFFERENT ERAS
Saturday will mark the 68th recorded meeting between Kentucky State and Central State in a rivalry dating to 1947.
 
Central State holds a 39-27-1 advantage in the all-time series, but Kentucky State has controlled the modern era. The Thorobreds are 17-4 against the Marauders since the rivalry resumed in 2005, including victories in each of the past two meetings.
 
The history between the programs has often shifted through extended runs. Central State won 17 consecutive meetings from 1979-95 before the series paused for nearly a decade. Since returning to the schedule, Kentucky State has reversed that momentum, including 10 consecutive victories from 2008-17.
 
KSU's largest victory in the rivalry came in 2021 when the Thorobreds defeated Central State 63-0. Kentucky State also earned a 20-6 victory earlier that season, making 2021 the only year in which the programs met twice.
 
More recently, the Thorobreds secured a 24-14 victory at McPherson Stadium in 2024 before defeating the Marauders 34-24 in the 2025 Detroit Football Classic at Ford Field.
 
A victory Saturday would give Kentucky State its third consecutive win over Central State and its 28th victory in the all-time series.
 
LAST TIME AGAINST THE MARAUDERS
Kentucky State overcame a six-point halftime deficit to defeat Central State 34-24 in last season's opener.
 
The Thorobreds trailed 16-10 at halftime before outscoring the Marauders 24-8 over the final two quarters. KSU took the lead with 10 points in the third quarter and added 14 more in the fourth to complete the comeback.
 
Kentucky State finished with 432 yards of total offense, including 302 passing yards and 130 rushing yards. The Thorobreds averaged nearly 7 yards per play and limited Central State to 316 total yards.
 
KSU also won the turnover battle 2-1, intercepting two Central State passes.
 
Darius Cyprian led the receiving corps with six catches for 122 yards and a touchdown. The Thorobreds produced three passing touchdowns and one rushing score in the victory.
 
THE NUMBERS BEHIND 2025
Kentucky State produced one of the most effective offensive seasons in program history during its run to the NCAA playoffs.
 
The Thorobreds scored 412 points and averaged 34.3 points per game. KSU accumulated 4,638 yards of total offense, averaging 386.5 yards per contest and 6.7 yards per play.
 
Kentucky State passed for 2,857 yards and 26 touchdowns while completing 195 of 321 attempts. The Thorobreds added 1,781 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns on the ground.
 
KSU scored 55 total touchdowns and converted 14 of its 17 fourth-down attempts. The Thorobreds were also effective inside the 20-yard line, scoring on 38 of 46 red-zone opportunities.
 
One of the team's greatest strengths was turning takeaways into points. Kentucky State scored 102 points off turnovers, compared with 43 by its opponents.
 
 
CYPRIAN RETURNS AS THE BIG-PLAY THREAT
Kentucky State enters the season with competition at several offensive positions, but the Thorobreds return an established difference-maker in Cyprian.
 
The preseason All-SIAC first-team selection led KSU with 42 receptions for 903 yards and eight touchdowns in 2025. He averaged 21.5 yards per reception and 75.3 receiving yards per game.
 
Cyprian also returned four kickoffs for 89 yards and finished the season with 990 all-purpose yards.
 
His most productive performance came against Clark Atlanta, when he caught six passes for 254 yards and three touchdowns. He produced four receptions of at least 45 yards during the season, including an 81-yard catch.
 
Cyprian will be joined by graduate receiver Jaden Hale and an emerging group that head coach Felton Huggins Jr. identified during preseason camp as one of the deepest position rooms on the roster.
 
Hale appeared in five games last season and caught nine passes for 129 yards, averaging 14.3 yards per reception.
 
NEW-LOOK BACKFIELD
Kentucky State will unveil a new running back rotation after replacing its top four rushers from last season.
 
The departed group accounted for 1,528 of KSU's 1,781 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns in 2025. That production included 789 yards and 13 touchdowns from Chad Elzy and 485 yards and three scores from Jaylen Middleton.
 
Transfer Trevion Jenkins is among the newcomers competing for significant opportunities. Jenkins produced more than 1,100 all-purpose yards at St. Ambrose last season and has earned praise from the coaching staff for his preparation and understanding of the offense.
 
The ability of Kentucky State's new backfield to establish the run and keep the offense balanced will be important against Central State.
 
ONE PLAY AT A TIME
Kentucky State's offense has adopted an "ONE" mentality entering the season, an acronym for "only now exists."
 
The approach emphasizes focusing on the current play instead of allowing a previous mistake, last season's success or future expectations to become a distraction.
 
That mentality could be especially important in a season opener featuring new personnel combinations and the emotions surrounding a rivalry game.
WHAT COULD DECIDE THE OPENER
Ball security will carry additional importance Saturday. Kentucky State generated 26 takeaways last season, including 16 interceptions and 10 fumble recoveries.
 
The Thorobreds will also look to improve their own ball security after losing nine fumbles during the 2025 campaign.
 
The battle at the line of scrimmage will be another area to watch. Kentucky State returns experience across its defensive front, while Central State added significant size and depth to both lines during the offseason.
 
KSU's defense held Central State to 118 passing yards last season but allowed 198 yards on the ground, including a 73-yard touchdown run. Preventing explosive rushing plays will be important for the Thorobreds in the rematch.
 
Offensively, Kentucky State will look to maintain its explosive passing ability while establishing consistency with new personnel in the backfield and across the offensive line.
 
Special teams and field position could also become deciding factors. The Thorobreds averaged 43.4 yards per punt last season, while nine punts traveled at least 50 yards and 15 were placed inside the opponent's 20-yard line.
