Box Score FRANKFORT, Ky. - The Kentucky State women's basketball team defeated the Chowan University Hawks, 65-60, on Friday night at the Exum Center. The game marks the Thorobrettes (1-0) first game of the 2014-15 season. Kentucky State is hosting the C.Y. Russell Classic which is being played on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 21-22, at the Exum Center.
The Hawks (0-3) controlled the game early, jumping out to a lead of as many as 12 points halfway through the opening half. A three-pointer from KSU guard
Taylor Sanders with 5:19 on the clock sparked a 7-0 Thorobrettes run that cut the Hawks lead to just three at 27-24.
After whittling down the CU lead in the final minutes, Kentucky State ended up with a chance for the final shot of the half, trailing by just two points, as the clock ran down. Sanders dribbled her way inside the Chowan defense and used a beautiful bounce pass to find a cutting
Logan Powell who put home an easy layup as time expired. That tied the game at 32-32 heading into the locker rooms.
In the second half, the Thorobrettes jumped out to an early six point lead and never looked back. Kentucky State held their lead for the rest of the game on their way to a 65-60 season opening victory.
Some new faces led the way offensively for Kentucky State on Friday. Senior transfer
Shaquanda Wiggins picked up a double double with a team-high 17 points and 10 rebounds. Wiggins' final three points helped seal the victory for KSU when she converted a layup and free throw after getting fouled with just 44 seconds left in the game. Transfer junior
Shaia Horton was aggressive on both ends of the floor picking up 16 points, four rebounds and a pair of steals.

Shayla Moore had a strong all-around game finishing with eight points, six boards and a team-high four assists. Sanders finished with nine points, three assists and a team-high four steals.
Chowan forward Alisha Mobley led the Hawks with 17 points and eight rebounds.
Kentucky State (1-0) returns tomorrow for a 4 p.m. matchup against Livingston College (2-1) who defeated Bluefield State College, 75-70, in today's tournament opener.
