KSU Thorobrettes Hold Off Miles College, 71-59

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Kentucky State Thorobrettes held off a resilient Miles College team to take a 71-59 victory at Knox-Windham Gym on Saturday afternoon.
 
Senior guard Sharnita Lloyd came off the bench and scored a team high 17 points to help push the Thorobrettes win streak to five games. The victory pushes Kentucky State's overall record to 11-9 and 8-5 in SIAC action. Jasmine Davis helped close out the game for the Thorobrettes going 10-of-12 from the free throw line including 6-of-6 in the final 14 seconds of the game.
 
Miles College was led by forward Courtney English who finished the game with 22 points, 16 rebounds, six blocks and three steals. The Lady Bear's played solid defense for much of the second half but they were plagued by turnovers, finishing the game with 25.
 
The Lady Bears record now stands at 6-16 overall, 2-10 in conference play.
 
At halftime the Thorobrettes held a 32-20 lead over the Lady Bears. A large factor in KSU's first half success was its ability to force Miles into 14 turnovers while committing just three themselves. The Thorobrettes finished on a strong note with a Shayla Moore steal leading to a Lloyd layup at the buzzer.
 
The Lady Bears were able to fight back into the game during the second half. A pair of free-throws by Miles guard Antesha Parks gave the Lady Bear's a 48-47 lead with 6:32 remaining in the game. The Thorobrettes were able to capture the lead back for good when Sophomore center Brielle Newton hit a pair of jumpers with under four minutes left in the game.
 
KSU and Miles played earlier this season on January 26th with Kentucky State securing the victory, 68-51. Lloyd had one of her best all-around games of the season. Lloyd finished with a team high 22 points, going 8-of-14 from the floor, eight rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block.
 
Kentucky State heads back home to play Central State University on Thursday, February 14th at 6 p.m.
