Box Score The Thorobrettes of Kentucky State women's basketball team tipped off against the Wilberforce University Bulldogs, Tuesday falling 67-59. The Brettes could not overcome a tough shooting night and a freak injury before falling to the hands of an old time foe.
Sharnita Lloyd and
Brielle Newton led the charge for the Brettes scoring in double figures despite the defeat.
During the first half (sophomore) center
Brielle Newton had three steals and scored the game's first points as the Brettes jumped out to an early 6-0 lead. The Brettes capitalized on several steals led by the trio of
Sharnita Lloyd,
Brielle Newton and
Jasmine Davis who teamed up and pushed the lead to 13-4 with 8:56 left in the 1st half.
Wilberforce would answer as the Brettes went cold from the field scoring just four points in the games next five minutes of action. With less than four minutes left in the half, Bulldogs would cut the lead to 20-11. Wilberforce's Kendra Moss turned the game around after she blocked a
Shayla Moore jump shot which lead to a 10-0 run that ended the half with the Brettes up just 26-23. The Brettes ended the 1st half shooting 10-30 from the field and 1-3 from behind the ard.
The second half was more of the same shooting except this time the Brettes were without the services of Senior Guard
Jasmine Davis who sustained an apparent knee injury in the first half. The poor shooting and loss of their floor general became insurmountable for the Brettes as the Bulldogs grabbed their first lead of the game 31-30 with 17:36 left in the 2nd half.
The rest of the game was a tough battle going back and forward but costly turnovers by the Brettes down the stretch lead to the Final of 67-59.
Senior guard
Sharnita Lloyd led the way with 13 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals. Sophomore
Brielle Newton added 10 pints, 6 rebounds and 6 steals.
Shayla Moore and
Style Harper added 8 points each while Junior
LaShell West had her lowest points of the season with just 6.
The Brettes will be in action on December 8th vs. West Virginia State University in their final game of the Fall Semester. They will begin Conference play after the Christmas Holidays with a contest on January 3 vs. Albany State University.
