Box Score FRANKFORT, Ky. (January 26, 2012) – With a pumped crowd at home rocking the house, the Kentucky State University Thorobrettes fell to The Stillman College Lady Tigers, (54-58), tonight at The William Exum Center.
The Brettes stampeded out the gate playing tough defense and forcing the Lady Tigers to get a shot clock violation. The team's leading scorer,
Jasmine Davis, put the Brettes on the board with a long-range three-pointer. Stillman pushed down the court and their own Jasmine (Banks) retaliated with a three. The Brettes' did not get easily intimidated and senior Asia Dubose fired back with another three-pointer.
This back and forth action lasted a majority of the first half of the game. Off the marker jumpers and defensive rebounds held the score at a standstill for five minutes, while crucial plays by both of the teams' benches kept the game close. The Brettes went into the locker room at the half up one point against the second ranked team in the conference (23-22).
The Brettes' came out of the locker room fired up. Dubose shot a long two with flawless form. Her teammates acted aggressively on defense pulling down rebounds. The Lady Tigers were able to regain their lead by going 4-4 at the line in the first four minutes of the half. Davis' three pointer tied the game and
Cortney Matthewis' jumper gave a lead change in favor of the Brettes.
The Lady Tigers attempted a comeback with multiple trips to the line and aggressive play in the paint. Junior,
Sharnita Lloyd made sure the Brettes presence was still known with a crucial three. Crossovers and forceful action in the paint by Kentucky State allowed them to get the upper hand on Stillman.
With 1:40, Jasmine Banks hit a very much needed three narrowing down the lead to three points. A foul sent Stillman's Jamila McKinnis to the line and she successful made both shots making the score 54-53. The shot clock ticked down at the further end of the court causing a rushed, unsuccessful shot. On the other end of the court Phyllice Eubanks attacks the basket with a good layup with 21 seconds left in the game. Three good free throws by McKinnis sealed the Lady Tigers win.
Jasmine Davis led the Brettes with 17 points and 3 assists.
Cortney Matthewis wasn't far behind her teammate with 11 points, 6 assists, 2 steals and a block.
The Kentucky State University Thorobrettes are now 6-10 (6-8 SIAC). The Brettes travel to Central State University for a non-conference matchup against Marauders on Saturday, January 28. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
