SAVANNAH, Ga. – Kentucky State women's basketball mounted a fourth-quarter comeback but came up just short in a 70-68 loss to Savannah State on Saturday.
Both
Amina Seck and
Amyah Adair-Mars led Kentucky State with 11 points each. Seck also paced the Thorobreds with seven rebounds.
Diara McBroom led all players with five assists, while
Alycia Triplett recorded a game-high six steals for the Thorobreds.
The first quarter was tightly contested. The Thorobreds went on an 8-0 run, capped by a fast-break layup from
Amyah Adair-Mars, to take an 8-6 lead at the 6:47 mark. The teams went on to tie the game seven more times before
Diara McBroom hit a jumper to knot the score at 20-20 at the end of the quarter.
Kentucky State found its groove in the second quarter, as
Morganne Postell hit one of two free throws to give the Thorobreds a 38-27 lead with 1:36 remaining in the half. The Thorobreds went into halftime leading 38-33.
At the 2:35 mark of the third quarter, Savannah State went on an 11-0 run to take a 53-44 lead. Eight Kentucky State fouls gave the Tigers 12 free-throw attempts, and they converted all of them to extend their lead to 55-46 at the end of the quarter.
The Thorobreds fought back in the fourth quarter, controlling the paint and outscoring the Tigers 12-4 inside. Thirteen points from the Kentucky State bench also helped the Thorobreds outscore Savannah State 20-15 in the period. However, the Tigers held on to edge Kentucky State 70-68 at the end of the quarter.
