JACKSONVILLE – Kentucky State men's basketball late surge fell short as the Thorobreds dropped a 68-63 decision on Thursday in Jacksonville.
Gregory Melvin knocked down five 3-pointers to lead all scorers with 20 points and also grabbed eight rebounds. Teammate Keon Henderson added 16 points.
Sean Paige recorded another double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and added two of the Thorobreds' five blocks. Kur Maler led the team in blocks with three.
The first half remained tight as Terin Wofford sank two free throws to tie the game at 11 with 12:16 remaining. He came through again less than a minute later, scoring on a fast break to tie it at 13 with 11:01 left in the half.
Kentucky State knotted the score once more on a second-chance layup by Keon Henderson with 2:12 remaining, but Edward Waters closed the half with a pair of free throws to take a 31-24 lead into the break.
In the second half, Edward Waters built a pair of early nine-point leads—42-33 at the 15:47 mark and 44-35 at 14:51.
Gregory Melvin helped trim the deficit near the midpoint of the half, hitting a field goal and converting a free throw to pull the Thorobreds within one, 51-50, with 9:32 remaining.
With just under three minutes to play, the Tigers stretched their lead to 66-58 at the 2:47 mark and held on from there to secure a 68-63 win at the end of regulation.

Conference play will continue for the Thorobreds as they to Savannah, Georgia on Saturday, Dec. 6 to take on Savannah State at 3 p.m.
