JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – In the closing seconds,
Aniyah Jenkins sinks two clutch free throws, leveling the score at 67-67 and pushing the game into overtime. Leading to a 79-70 overtime win against the Edward Water Tigers.
Out the starting gate the Thorobreds Kerr made a jumper and
Jayln Shelby made both of free throws to start off with an early 4-0 lead in the first quarter. After a brief tie, Kentucky State went on a 15-2 run for 6:55 to take a 19-7 lead at the end of the quarter.
Edward Waters went on a 10-2 run to come to within four of the 24-20 Kentucky State lead at 4:40 in the second quarter.
As the Thorobreds caught trouble shooting from the field the Tigers took advantage and closed on the Kentucky State 32-27 going into halftime.
A quick run early in the third quarter led to a tie that followed with a 36-32 lead with 5:51 left in the quarter.
Aniyah Jenkins tied the game 36-36 for the Thorobreds with a jumper at 5:16 in the third. Edward Waters responded going on a small run to take a 41-38 at 3:45.
The Tigers were able to capitalize on their late 9-2 scoring run that was ended by two made free throws from
Sydney Thomas. Edward Waters was able to bounce back and take a 51-41 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Kentucky State continued to fight with the Tigers to go on a 11-2 run and close on the 57-54 Edward Waters lead with 5:58 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Kerr narrowed the gap for the Thorobreds to just one point in the late fourth quarter with a remarkable long-range three-pointer, bringing the score to 59-58 in favor of the Tigers.
Jenkins calmly sank two crucial free throws in the waning moments of the fourth quarter, knotting the game at 67-67 and propelling the contest into overtime.
In overtime the Thorobreds jumped ahead with four points from
Taleah Dilworth to take a 71-67 at 3:39 in overtime. The strong start led to a 79-70 Kentucky State victory.
Kerr went 100% (4-of-4) from the charity stripe to lead Kentucky State with 20 points and five assists.
Dilworth went 80% (8-of-10) from the free-throw line and made four shots from the field to score 18 points.
Along with being clutch Jenkins earned a double-double of 14 rebounds and 10 points.
Women's basketball will host SIAC opponent Allen on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 1 p.m. inside the William Exum Center.
