ST. LOUIS – Kentucky State men's volleyball fell 3-1 in their season opener at Maryville Friday evening in St. Louis, Missouri.
Maryville got ahead 17-14 on a service ace in the first set. Kentucky State came to within one (20-19) on an attack error by the Saints. A kill by Trent Findley tied the set 23-23, and back-to-back bad sets by Maryville gave the Thorobreds a 26-24 first-set win and a 1-0 match lead.
The Saints won the second set 25-10 to tie the match at 1-1.
In the third set, the Thorobreds went on an early 5-0 run before the Saints tied the game 15-15 on a kill. The set would follow with two more ties and a five-point run by Maryville that gave them a 25-19 set win and a 2-1 match lead.
Kentucky State fell behind 7-0 early in the fourth set and would fight back to just a two-point (22-20) deficit on a service. Maryville scored the final two points to win the set 25-21 and match 3-1.
Connor Butler led Kentucky State with eight kills, two aces, and 12 digs.
Kade Andruski led the Thorobreds with 22 assists and 12 digs.
The Thorobreds will continue to play at Missouri S&T on Saturday, January 14, at 1 p.m. central.
