NBA All-Time Single Game Block Leader Elmore Smith Named to Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame

FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame (KSHOF) named Kentucky State Legend and All-American Elmore Smith as a member of the 2021 class.

This year's class will consist of six members Smith, John Asher, Dwane Casey, Romeo Crennel, Rachel Komisarz Baugh, and Keith Madison.

Smith was a member of the 1970 and 1971 Kentucky State men's basketball NAIA National Championship teams. In 1971 he set the national record for rebounds with 799 while averaging 22.3 points per game at Kentucky State. In his final season with the Kentucky State, he was named first-team NAIA All-American.

The Buffalo Braves used their third pick in the first round of the 1971 NBA Draft to select Smith. During his eight seasons in the NBA, he played for the Braves, Lakers, Bucks, and Cavaliers. He averaged 13.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 2.9 blocks per game. In his historic rookie season, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie team in 1971-72.

Smith left his name in the NBA record books. He set a season record for blocked shots with 397 in 1973-74 while setting the All-Time NBA single-game block record with 17 against Portland in 1973.

Smith established the famous Elmore Smith's Gourmet BBQ sauces, and restaurants that bear his name can be found at Cleveland Clinic and Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse.

The 2021 KSHOF class members will be honored on Sept. 7, 2021, at the Galt Hotel in downtown Louisville. If you would like to attend the event, contact Julie Howell at jhowell@louisvillesports.org / (502) 587-6742.
