FRANKFORT, Ky. — Kentucky State men's basketball student-athlete Keon Henderson balanced the demands of his sport and the classroom to earn one of the university's highest academic honors as salutatorian of the Class of 2026.

When Henderson found he had been named salutatorian of the Class of 2026, his first thought went back to the habits he had built long before college — habits rooted in discipline, balance and consistency.

"When I found out that I was named salutatorian, my first reaction was that I knew it was obtainable because of all the habits that I've created for myself ever since I was a kid when it came to balancing athletics and academics," Henderson said.

For Henderson, the honor represents what is possible through dedication and sacrifice. While competing for Kentucky State, he also excelled in the classroom, earning the Outstanding Student-Athlete Award and Outstanding Award from the College of Business.

He credited Professor Kristel Smith, his coaches, teammates and athletic support staff with helping him stay focused during pressure-filled moments. But Henderson also understood that success required sacrifice, including missing out on parts of the traditional college experience.

"My family motivated me throughout my time at Kentucky State," Henderson said. "Obtaining my degree just meant being one step closer to success that my family has never seen before."

Henderson said Kentucky State taught him he was capable of more than he imagined. Since arriving on campus, he has grown into a more mature, focused person who understands the value of time.

As one of the top graduates in the Class of 2026, Henderson said representing Kentucky State University carries special meaning. He hopes his achievement encourages other student-athletes to strive for greatness and not allow their sport to define them.

"I hope this message motivates other students to strive for greatness and not allow their sport to define them," Henderson said.

After graduation, Henderson plans to pursue professional basketball while building an athlete media solutions company. His long-term goal is to become the first millionaire in his family.

His advice to younger student-athletes is simple.

"No goal is too big," Henderson said.
