Home SIAC series' highlight week

The Kentucky State University baseball and softball teams will both play five games this week as the Thorobreds will begin Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference West Division action with home series this weekend.

BASEBALL
Kentucky State travels to Lincoln Memorial (19-8) 3 p.m. Wednesday in non-conference action. The Railsplitters comes into the game riding an eight-game winning streak and a 5-2 home record. The winning streak includes a doubleheader sweep of nationally-ranked Carson-Newman.

Lincoln Memorial's last loss came as they lost 2-of-3 to #10 Catawba.

Coming off a four-game SIAC conference series this weekend, the pitching rotation for Wednesday's game hasn't been decided.

Lane College (4-13 overall, 0-4 SIAC) comes to town for a four-game SIAC series. Senior Joe Crisp, 2-2, (Shelbyville, TN), junior Greg Tye, 4-0, (Knoxville, TN), junior Brady Bibbs, 3-0, (Hornersville, MO) and freshman Solomon Reed, 1-0, (Cincinnati, OH) are slated to take the ball during the series.

The trio of Tye, Bibbs, and Reed surrendered just three earned runs over 20 2/3 innings in the three victories over Morehouse.

Senior Russell Sims (Harrodsburg, KY) is coming off a week in which he slashed .481/.548/.566 over eight games, and enabled the Thorobreds to take three-of-four from the Maroon Tigers. He is hitting .410 on the season with a team-high 22 RBI from the leadoff position.

SOFTBALL
Coming off a five-game stretch in which the pitching duo of senior Paola Flores (San Lorenzo, PR) and freshman Katelyn Hurley (Elizabeth, IN) posted a 1.00 ERA, the Kentucky State softball team looks to continue its impressive play in the circle when they travel to Asbury 5 p.m. Wednesday, and host a four-game series with Tuskegee this weekend.

Hurley, who was named SIAC Pitcher of the Week, allowed just two hits over 10 innings in two games. Flores was the victim of some defensive miscues as she surrendered 14 runs in three games, but only four of which were earned.

Senior Natalia Bocanegra (Covina, CA) is the reigning SIAC Player of the Week after hitting a crossover-high .688 in 16 at-bats. She slashed .688/.750/1.000 in the five-game event. Bocanegra had one double, two triples and four RBI. Senior Jittaun Thompson (Pomona, CA) slashed .438/.438/.688 with two triples and three RBI during the crossover.

Asbury (3-11 overall) has lost 11 of its last 12 games and four straight. It will be the first home game of the season for the Eagles.

Tuskegee (5-12 overall, 3-2 SIAC) comes into the game riding a three-game winning streak, all in the SIAC Crossover event. The Golden Tigers boosted their offensive totals by running up 30 runs on Paine College in the final game of the event.

Senior pitcher Chelsea Mowery leads Tuskegee with a slash line of .395/.426/.535. On the mound, she is 1-5 with a 5.07 ERA. She hit .439 in the SIAC Crossover.

During the crossover, the Golden Tigers were led offensively by Jasmyne Lawrence – who hit .524 (11-of-21) with four doubles, one homerun and a team-high eight RBI.
