SAVANNAH, GA – The Kentucky State University women's track and field team opened the outdoor season with a seventh-place finish in the 10-team Savannah State University relays.

"I was really impressed with the team's performances this weekend," said Kentucky State University head coach Fatimah Shabazz. "We had several student-athletes return from injuries and illnesses. We ran several relays this weekend because the meet didn't have a few of our normal open events."

Senior Chelsey Ford (Versailles, KY) led the way for the Thorobreds, scoring in all three of her field events. She posted a personal best distance of 38.16 meters in the hammer to place fifth. Ford was sixth in the shot put (10.51 meters) and sixth in the discus (35.34).

Freshman Amani Wagner (Yellow Springs, OH) continued the Kentucky State field event excellence. She placed second, the highest Division II thrower, in the shot put (12.08 meters). Wagner was also fourth in the discus (36.31 meters). Senior Angel Freeman (Toledo) was fifth in the shot put (10.9 meters).

Redshirt freshman Princess Morris (Louisville, KY) was fifth (1:06.33) and sophomore Gernee' Lockhart (Louisville, KY) was eighth (1:09.05) in the 400 meter run. Morris teamed with senior Brianna Patterson (Houston, TX), junior Cora Teets (Harrodsburg, KY) and freshman Alaria Long (Covington, KY) to place fourth in the distance medley relay (15:45.19) to round out the scoring.

Kentucky State returns to action Saturday at the GATA Classic, hosted by Georgia Southern University.
