SAN JUAN, PR – Senior
Amani Williams tallied a career-high 21 points as the Kentucky State University women's basketball team opened the season with a 65-39 victory over the University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon Friday.
Williams (Scotch Plains, N.J.) knocked down a career-best five three pointers and was 8-of-10 shooting to reach the 21 points. She added three rebounds, one assist and one steal. She was the only Kentucky State player in double figures.
Kentucky State (1-0) return to the court 2 p.m. Saturday against the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras.
"It wasn't our best game, but anytime you can get a win on the road, you have to give yourself a pat on the back," said Kentucky State University women's basketball coach
Terrance Slater. "We have to continue to work on our execution and our chemistry on offense and defense. But we are happy to be on the winning side and we will build off of this."
The Thorobreds shot 43.1 percent (25-of-58) from the field and 50 percent (8-of-16) from three-point range.
Senior
Victoria Blankenship (Fayetteville, N.C.) was a point shy of a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds. Senior
Jessie Kee (Indianapolis, Ind.) and junior
Erica Jones (South Haven, Miss.) added eight points each with eight rebounds and six rebounds, respectively.
Junior
Allenia Ponder (Smyrna, Ga.) led the team with five of the team's 14 assists and a team-best four steals.
