Three players reached double figures and the Kentucky State University men's basketball team shot 46.7 percent from the field, but the Thorobreds fell to Lane College, 100-81, Saturday in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at the William Exum Center.
Senior guard
Ditalion Battle (Cincinnati, OH) led the way with 19 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals in 33 minutes of action. Senior
David Jelks (Conyers, GA) added 16 points and six rebounds, while junior
Grant Goode (Matawan, NJ) finished with 12 points and four assists.
Freshman
Jah Bennett (Columbus, OH) tied a career-high with 10 rebounds.
After the Dragons opened the game by scoring 12 of the game's first 14 points, Kentucky State battled back – cutting their deficit to two points three times before a 9-0 spurt pushed the deficit back to 11 points.
Junior
Kevin Wharton-Price (Pittsburgh, PA) drilled a three-pointer and Battle added a pair of free throws to get KSU to within five at the break.
Kentucky State carried that momentum into the second half, and continued a spurt that finally ended at 15-4 and with the Thorobreds holding a one-point lead. The lead changed hands a couple of times before Lane scored 11 straight points for a 63-52 lead.
The Thorobreds pulled to within six points, midway through the half, but a Dragon 18-2 run pushed the KSU deficit to 22 points.
Kentucky State (7-13 overall, 5-7 SIAC) hosts LeMoyne-Owen 7:30 p.m. Monday in SIAC action. KSU escaped Memphis with a 91-90 victory over the Magicians on December 3. Â
