Ditalion Battle and junior
Kevin Wharton-Price combined for 13 of the school-record 17 three-pointers as the Kentucky State University men's basketball team buried LeMoyne-Owen under a barrage of three-pointers in recording the 99-77 victory Monday in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at the William Exum Center.
The victory snapped the Magicians five-game winning streak. (
Post Game Interview)
Wharton-Price (Pittsburgh, PA) was efficient in his offensive attack, shooting 7-of-9 from the floor – including 6-of-8 from beyond the arc – to score 20 points in 21 minutes of action. Battle (Cincinnati, OH), who moved to the team lead in scoring, was 10-of-21 from the field and 7-of-17 from three-point range for a career-high 31 points. He added two rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Senior
David Jelks (Conyers, GA) added 15 points and a season-high 15 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. He added to the three-point parade, making a pair of triples. It was the first time in 12 games, the center even attempted a shot from beyond the arc.
Junior
Grant Goode (Matawan, NJ) reached double-digits for the third time in four games with a career-high 17 points.
Battle started and ended the 15-4 run that gave Kentucky State its first double-figure lead with three-pointers.
However, LOC started to feed the ball to the post, racking up fouls on the Thorobreds as five players were forced to watch parts of the half with two fouls. It enabled the Magicians to pull to within four points with four KSU starters on the bench.
Then, Wharton-Price got hot.
The junior sharpshooter hit back-to-back three-pointers, then freshman
Jah Bennett (Columbus, OH) drilled a three of his own, and Wharton-Price added another long range basket. When the dust settled, KSU was up 14.
Kentucky State's lead was 10 points at halftime, and just nine with 11:18 remaining in the second half.
Battle kicked started the game-sealing run with a three-pointer, and teamed with Wharton-Price to score 17 points in the 19-8 run that pushed the lead to 21 points.
Kentucky State (8-13 overall, 6-7 SIAC) travels to Mobile, AL to face Spring Hill 3 p.m. Saturday in SIAC action.
