Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Season-high 29 for Battle in win over Spring Hill

A 14-2 run late in the second half turned a nail biter into a rout as the Kentucky State University men's basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak, and won for the first time since the calendar flipped to 2019, beating Spring Hill 90-72 Monday in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at the William Exum Center. Senior Ditalion Battle (Cincinnati, OH) hit back-to-back three pointers and followed the long range exploits with a dunk to cap the aforementioned run. Once the spurt was concluded, KSU's four-point lead had ballooned to 16 points.

Battle, who finished with a season-high 29 points, was one of four players to reach double figures in the Thorobreds' victory. Senior Austin Sherrell (Detroit, MI) registered his second double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 boards.

Senior Kevin Hayes (Detroit, MI), the league's leading scorer, added 17 points, four rebounds and four assists, while junior Grant Goode (Matawan, NJ) tallied a career-high 14 points.

Four of the five starters found the scorebook in the opening moments as Kentucky State had an 18-2 run in the early parts of the contest. The one starter that didn't score, Felix Wilson, distributed three of the team's four assists during the run.

For as quick as KSU built its double digit advantage, Spring Hill dropped nine straight points in short order to pull to within one possession.

Kentucky State's lead fluctuated between nine points and three points during the remainder of the first half, and the Thorobreds took a four-point lead into halftime.

The Thorobreds scored the first seven points of the second half to build its lead to 11 points. Their lead grew to as much as 12, but the Badgers didn't want to go away quietly. Spring Hill scored 20 of the next 24 points to get to within four points.

And then Kentucky State put the game away on the 14-2 spurt.

Kentucky State (7-11 overall, 5-6 SIAC) steps away from SIAC action to face Salem University 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the William Exum Center. KSU fell to the Wildcats, 73-67, earlier this season at the Salem Tournament.
