Campbell Notches a Double-Double as WBB Falls to CSU, 62-53

Box Score

Frankfort, Ky.— In the second battle between two bitter rivals in neighboring states, Kentucky State University women's basketball came up short to Central State University 62-53 on Saturday night at the Exum Center.

The Thorobrettes (7-17, 6-10) dropped their fifth consecutive game dating back to a Jan. 23 overtime victory against non-conference opponent Oakland City University. The loss marks the first time since the 2009-10 season KSU was swept in a single season series by CSU. The Lady Marauders (19-5, 12-4) have now won 10 of their last 12 games, and will head into the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with at least the No. 2 seed in the postseason tournament.

In a highly contested first half, KSU took a 31-30 advantage into the locker room. Senior guard Brittani Rizzi highlighted the KSU scoring threat with 10 points in the opening quarter of action. Rizzi went scoreless in the second frame, but junior forward Jordan Campbell stepped up in a time of need, powering the Thorobrettes with nine points off the bench.

The Lady Marauders turned up the tempo to start the third stanza with 18-3 run to take the lead and pull away from the hosting green and gold at 48-34. KSU brought the game within double digits on two separate occasions but couldn't overcome the deficit.

Campbell finished with her second double-double of the season with a team-high 16 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Campbell has scored double-digits in five of her last 10 games and is currently second on the team in scoring with just over eight points a game.

Rizzi ended her night with 13 points, hitting 3-of-5 from beyond the arc, along with three assists.

The contest with CSU concluded the regular season home schedule, as KSU will put the final touches on the season with games at Miles College and Tuskegee University on Feb. 17 and 19.
