Box Score WILBERFORCE, OH – Senior Tara Jefferson scored the last six Kentucky State points, including a basket with one minute remaining, as the Thorobreds opened the season with a 60-58 victory over Wilberforce in the first game of the Theresa Cheek Tip-Off Tournament, hosted by Central State University Saturday.

Behind Jefferson's (Milwaukee, WI) six points and a basket from senior Brooke Wallace (Oberlin, OH), the Thorobreds closed the game by scoring eight of the last 10 points to secure the victory. The last run didn't appear needed with the way the game started.

Kentucky State went on a 10-2 run midway through the second quarter to open up the game's first double-figure lead, a lead that would balloon to 14 at halftime.

The Thorobreds advantage grew to as much as 17 in the third quarter before the Bulldogs fought back. Wilberforce scored 13 of 15 points during a stretch in the quarter to get back to within six, and that would be the KSU lead going into the final 10 minutes.

A 12-2 spurt to open the fourth quarter had Kentucky State trailing for the first time since the first quarter.

Wallace pulled down a career-high 19 rebounds to go along with 12 points, three blocks, two steals and two assists. Jefferson finished with a team-high 15 points with eight boards, four steals, two assists and a block. They enabled Kentucky State to own a significant 32-18 edge in points in the paint.

Junior Jessie Kee (Indianapolis, IN) came off the bench with 14 points and four boards in 22 minutes of action.

Kentucky State (1-0) faces Salem University 2 p.m. Sunday at the Theresa Cheek Tournament.
