MBB Comes Up Short in Overtime to SHC, 84-83

Box Score Mobile, Ala.—Kentucky State University men's basketball fell to Spring Hill College on the road in overtime 84-83 at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center on Monday night.

The Thorobreds (6-13, 5-7) had their three-game win streak come to an end, and still sit at No.2 in the standings of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference West division at 3-2, trailing Central State University at 4-0. The Badgers (5-13, 3-7) have won three of their last five games and are currently sitting at No. 5 in the standings of the division.

KSU took an early lead as senior guard Micheal Stevenson set the tone early on for the visitors, scoring 15 of his team-leading 26 points in the first half, for a 37-32 lead at intermission.

SHC kept the game within single-digits in the second half, coming within a point on several occasions. With over three minutes to play in regulation and trailing by eight, the Badgers made their move with 10-2 run to bring the game to a 71-71 tie with 18 seconds left to go. Senior guard Dorian Jordan took the final shot of regulation, coming up short and forcing overtime.

KSU led by as much four in the extra period at 77-73, but an 11-4 run by the Badgers shut the green and gold down over the final three and half minutes for the eventual final.

"We forced 26 turnovers, limited our own turnovers, got the looks we wanted, but we just weren't able to convert on a lot of the easy ones," said head coach Jamaal Jackson. "We were outrebounded by 24, and all of those second chance opportunities hurt us severely."

The Thorobreds kept themselves in the game with a high volume of turnovers resulting in 35 points off turnovers. While KSU did allow a large number of rebounds, SHC only managed 11 second chance points. As a team, the Thorobreds had their best night of the year at the free throw line going 32-for-36 for 89 percent.

Stevenson's career night marked the first time this season he scored over 20 points, going 9-of-16 from the floor, 7-of-8 from the charity stripe, and pulling down six rebounds.

Junior guard Ray Croon added 18 points, while hitting a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line.

Next up for KSU, will be a road matchup with Lane College on Jan. 27 at 4pm ET.
