Softball has Setback Against Nova Southeastern

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Ft. Lauderdale, Fla—Kentucky State University softball dropped both games of a doubleheader against Nove Southeastern University on Tuesday night at AD Griffin Field.

The Thorobrettes (0-7) are still in search of picking up their first win of the season after starting the season on a seven-game losing streak. It'll be a quick turnaround as KSU takes on Lynn University on Wednesday morning. First pitch is scheduled for 10 am due to inclement weather in the south Florida area.

Game 1: NSU 8 KSU 0

Freshman pitcher Courtney Payne lost the second game of her young collegiate career, pitching five and two-thirds inning for KSU. Over her body of work the Owensboro, Kentucky resident battled through tough situations, allowing eight runs, six runs earned, and striking out four in the process.

Senior first baseman Kaitlin Oshiro and junior designated hitter Brittney Gately each went 1-for-3 at the plate, collecting the only two hits for KSU.

Game 2: NSU 9 KSU 4

The Thorobrettes pushed across a run in the top of the first inning due to a host of errors by the Sharks, but the lead was short-lived as NSU struck with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

NSU played add-on with a run in the second inning, but KSU responded with a RBI groundout by sophomore Jittuan Thompson, putting the deficit at 4-2. The Sharks extended their lead to 9-2 with a run in the third and four in the fourth, all charged to freshman pitcher Chante Thome.

Fellow freshmen pitcher Kaija Aikman proved to be the run stopper, pitching two scoreless innings as the Thorobrette offense found a spark in the seventh inning.

Gately laid down a perfect squeeze bunt, for a sacrifice, scoring senior center fielder Tyniesha Wilson from third. On the next at-bat, Thompson added her second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to center field; scoring junior left fielder Alysha Sakamura for a final of 9-4 for the hosting Sharks.

Sakamura finished with a second multi-hit game of the season, as she went 2-for-4, and Wilson claimed her multi-hit game as well with a 2-for-3 performance.
