Austin Sherrell scored a career-high 23 points as Kentucky State University men's basketball lost to Clark Atlanta University at Epps Gymnasium on Monday night.
The Thorobreds (3-10, 2-4) have dropped three consecutive games, after winning three of four, including two conference matchups. The Panthers (11-1, 5-0) have now won at least 10 games or more in back-to-back seasons after only recording single-digit winning season in three of four years, from 2012 to 2015.
KSU led on two separate occasions in the opening three and a half minutes of the game, but as CAU tied it up at 10-10. The Panthers jumped ahead with a 15-6 run to put themselves in the driver's seat for the rest of the night.
"We shot poorly tonight, and to keep yourself in a game when you're shooting like that, you have to defend and rebound, which we didn't do," said head coach
Jamaal Jackson. "We're still sitting in third place of the west division with most of the conference schedule left to go, so we have to come back next week ready to fight."
Sherrell shot 8-of-14 from the floor and pulled down five rebounds to go along with his career-high in points.
Kevin Hayes turned in a solid night with 17 points while hitting 6-of-7 from the floor. Outside of Sherrell and Hayes, KSU combined to shoot 10-of-36 for the floor for 27 percent. Behind the three-point line, KSU went 1-of-16.

David Jelks returned to his home state for a team-high 10 rebound performance and added eight points.
The Thorobreds will have a week off for the holiday season and will return home for a Saturday doubleheader match up with Benedict College on Dec. 30. The women will tip off at 1 PM ET, followed by the men at 3 PM ET.
